An existential dance expedition into unspoiled nature. Uncertainty, mistakes, cracks, scratches. A situation stripped down to the bone. Multimedia scenic modulation of the biotope of an unnamed island on the Jakubský pond in the village of Poušť, Nymburk district. Who is human and who is animal. A shockingly vivid performance.

The production Ostrov! received a nomination for the Divadelní noviny Award, a nomination for the Thalia Award, and at the 2021 Theatre Critics Awards it was ranked among the five best productions in 2021. At the Theatre Critics Awards it was also the highest rated dance production in the Czech Republic. Ifigenia and Ariadne Toumbeki for female acting, Jaroslav Wertig for scenography, and Jiří Konvalinka for music were also nominated for Ostrov!. Burkicom also received 3 nominations/votes for Theatre of the Year 2021. In 2024, the performance won the Oblak Award, the main prize of the PUF Dance Festival in Pula, Croatia, and was included among the 14 best world performances at the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo.

BURKICOM

Burkicom is a leading Czech company of contemporary physical theatre founded in 2015 by choreographer Jana Burkiewiczová. Her unique style, supported by collaboration with leading Czech designers, brings distinctive contemporary theatre to current sociological topics, dominated by specific movement techniques and artistic concepts. “We dance so that we can say more than just words. We speak so that we can overcome the shadow of gesture. The image is as important to us as news information. Dance is the flight of a bird of paradise, a cry and an exchange of opinions. Through theatre we try to understand the society we live in.” Dancers, actors, musicians, artists, performers.

Burkicom’s home stage is the industrial space La Fabrika in Prague’s Holešovice, but the company’s individual productions have already been appreciated by audiences at many theatre and dance festivals, from the Brno World of Theatre and South Korean PAMS Seoul, through Indonesian SIPA to the German Fringe Recklinghausen.
