Variations around Brazilian folk dances / How to recycle energy?

Cécile Da Costa

Cécile Da Costa’s intention during the workshop is not to guide participants towards any ritual form of dance or to offer an experience of this kind.

The workshop is based on transforming physical training inspired by the Brazilian folk theatre traditions Bumba Meu Boi and Cavalo Marinho into creative improvisation. Participants will observe how their energy fluctuates and explore how they can work with it. They will discover ways of recycling and renewing energy through breathing, releasing movement, emotions and sharing the present moment with others.

Tools

Music: an important partner and source of support throughout the experience.
The relationship between rhythm and meaning.
Different forms of connection: with space, partners and the body, while respecting each participant’s individual character and anatomical traits.

During one of her journeys through northern Brazil, Cécile Da Costa had the opportunity to witness two forms of Brazilian folk dance – Bumba Meu Boi and Cavalo Marinho. Alongside her fascination with the dancers’ dexterity, lightness and speed, she began to wonder how older men were able to dance throughout the night without becoming tired. Where did their energy come from? How were they able to renew it?

Under specific circumstances – for example, during rituals – people can sometimes discover a source of power that surprises them. It can feel as though they are connecting to an endless source of energy existing all around them.

The workshop is suitable for all lovers of movement and dance. No previous dance experience is required.
